What was supposed to be a serene afternoon in Baisaran Valley, nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Pahalgam, turned into an unspeakable tragedy. Twenty-six lives were lost. More than twenty others were wounded. All of them—ordinary tourists, families, dreamers with cameras and open hearts—became the unwilling targets of terror. And now, in the heavy quiet that follows, so many of us find ourselves at a loss for words. Not because we are indifferent, but because the grief is too dense to speak through.

As The Hindu reported on April 26, 2025, the attack was no accident. It was orchestrated with improvised explosive devices, hidden along a popular tourist trail. Authorities believe it was a deliberate attempt to shake Kashmir’s already fragile calm, and in the words of a local administrator, it was “an attack on the spirit of Kashmiriyat.”

And as I sit with that truth, a single question keeps echoing through the silence—through the ash and the sorrow:
Why so much hatred, when our roots are the same?

We may worship differently. We may be separated by language, geography, ideology. We may call different cities home—Delhi, Lahore, London, Srinagar. But beneath these layers, beneath the names and borders, aren’t we the same? Made of the same breath? Driven by the same need to be seen, to be safe, to love and be loved? Our hearts still beat to a rhythm not divided by religion or politics—but by hope.

Kashmir, the place now scarred once more, has never just been a patch of land. It is an idea, a memory, a melody of what humans can create together—when we choose creation over destruction. The valleys sing with poetry. The people speak with a warmth that can disarm you. The culture is a quiet mosaic of Sufi hymns, saffron tea, and timeless resilience. And yet, time and time again, this beauty is interrupted—by bombs that ask no questions and bullets that answer to no one.

In the wake of the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, quoted in The Times of India on April 26, said:
“We mourn the innocent lives lost in Pahalgam. Such acts of terror will never be tolerated.”
The words were strong. They needed to be. But what followed in the valley was perhaps stronger still—because the people of Kashmir responded not with vengeance, but with dignity.

By dawn the next morning, local volunteers were organizing blood donation drives. Hospital corridors buzzed not with fear, but with quiet determination. “Tourists are our guests,” said Bilal Ahmad, a hotelier in Pahalgam, in an interview with The Indian Express on April 27. “This attack was on our honor.”

And in those simple words, you hear the real heartbeat of Kashmir.

To my dear students—you, who navigate a world pulsing with both innovation and unrest, who carry more than just laptops and deadlines—you carry questions. You carry empathy. You carry the quiet strength of reflection in a time of noise. And that matters. It deeply matters.

So choose to ask the uncomfortable questions. Choose to feel, even when it would be easier to analyze or optimize your way out of discomfort. Choose to stretch beyond roles and resumes—to pause, to connect, to truly see the person behind the numbers. Because the world doesn’t need more performance metrics. It doesn’t need more reaction. It needs deeper understanding. And it needs it from you—the ones positioned to lead with both mind and heart.

When I look at you, I don’t just see students. I see future CEOs, change-makers, culture-shapers. People with the courage to remind this hurting world that in boardrooms or valleys, behind policies or pain, we are still—at our core—bound by the same breath. That our real inheritance isn’t power or position, but a shared humanity that endures.

So let’s not allow hatred to speak louder than the heart.

And if ever you feel helpless—when the news feels too bleak, too distant—remember this: even one decision made in kindness, one action led by conscience, can soften the sharpest cruelty. Be that voice. Be that choice. For Pahalgam. For peace. For each other.
